New garden bed planted

This is the new "wave bed" we've completed in the veggie garden. the edge is just fun to look at, and it allows the students to access the bed a bit better for weeding, harvesting and just admiring. Keep posted for pictures as our onions, peas, lettuce and garlic grow. we've planted a vetch cover crop between the plants as well to help enrich the soil.

Winter in the Garden!

Well, as the hustle and bustle of the holiday season speeds up, the weather gets colder and the plants slow down a little, the student gardeners have been busy tending the over-wintering crops of greens, harvesting the remaining lettuces, learning to make top-notch compost piles and(4th and 5th graders) learning about native plants in the mint family-we have 5 different types of sage in the coastal classroom alone! Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure..

Welcome!

Welcome to the official blog of the Ulloa Elementray Garden, part of the Hands-On Botany and Gardening program here that is sponsored by Great Adventures Through Education. Rebecca Cherny, the director of Great Adventures, has been coordinating this garden for 20 years now, and as the new Garden Teacher, I'm happy to be on board. As you walk through the gardens and grounds over the next year you will see much expansion and many changes as we work to turn this into a world-class school garden!

The big news is that we have completed the plan for our schoolyard greening! look it over! gardens, water catchment and more are all planned and everything like this that we do will improve the environment our students learn and grow it. Exciting and so so worth the trouble!
